Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep
Literal Comprehension
Robert Frost is a 20th-century American poet. In this poem, the persona is traveling through the woods in the evening. The persona stopped his horse by a forest filled up with snow in an evening. The forest belonged to a person whose house was in the village. So he would not see the speaker who was enjoying his beautiful forest. The speaker stopped his horse between the forest and the frozen lake, and there was no farmhouse nearby. He watched the beauty of nature until the sound of the horse. So, the horse felt unusual and shook its harness bell to ask its master if he had made a mistake. The beauty of the wood was fascinating the speaker, but he could not remain there for long because he had many other things to do. He had to keep his promises or fulfill a great many responsibilities before he left this earth.
Interpretation
In this philosophical poem, the poet tries to explore a deep meaning of human life through the description of his journey and the beauty of woods. He seems to say life is a journey, which everyone must do. We should not break when we are touched by the beauty of nature. Death is the ultimate destination of this journey and we have to complete lots of work before we die. Similarly, the poem shows that nature is lovely and inspiring to human beings. It is a storehouse of pleasure and inspiration.
Critical Thinking
Although the poem is composed skillfully, I can’t fully agree with the poet. I wonder if the horse is sensible enough to shake its harness bell to remind its master of his mistake. The poet also does not say
clearly what sort of promises the speaker has to keep before he passes away.
Assimilation
This poem has a tremendous impact on me. The poem made me feel my responsibility towards my society. The god has given distinct roles. So, I must accomplish it.
